The Institutional Review Board (IRB)
What is an IRB?
The Institutional Review Board or IRB is a comittee set up to ensure that students or staff that conduct research on humans or animals are doing it in a way that creates the least amount of harm for the most amount of benefit. In other words the IRB is an ethical board that stops ethically questionable research.
When do I need an IRB?
It does not hurt to use an IRB whenever you are doing research on human subjects, however, IRBs a used primarily when research findings will be published and there is a risk of subject information being exposed to the public.
